Brockport firefighters receive Homeland Security grant

Congressman Tom Reynolds presented Fire Chief Laurence Vaughan with a Commercial Direct Assistance Program grant check for $54,000. The funds sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security in cooperation with the Department of Defense will be for the procurement of a radio system that allows for multiple systems across county and state lines to communicate with one another during a large scale emergency operation.

Vaughan said, "This is the first award of its kind in New York state, and we are very excited to share the news with the communities we serve."

The grant application was filed last fall when firefighters attempted to convince the Department of Homeland Security that this equipment was needed. Due to Brockport's geographic location, it is faced with unusual communication challenges when responding mutual aid to our neighboring jurisdictions as we border two counties; neither of which uses common communications frequencies to each other or with Monroe County's.
