Brockport flower baskets blossom

Visitors to downtown Brockport will be greeted by the vision of brightly blooming blossoms hanging from the light poles - thanks to the efforts of downtown merchants who banded together and sought donations for weekly watering.

"The baskets are up and beautiful!" Pat Kutz, owner of Lift Bridge Book Shop and organizer of the "basket adoption" project. "We've collected $1,640 in donations both large and small. We still need about $400 to cover the watering for the rest of the season but we are getting there."

The Village of Brockport had funds set aside to purchase the flower baskets but there was no money in the budget to cover the watering necessary to keep the plants alive on the weekends.

The cost for weekend watering is $200 a week for 10 to 12 weeks.

"We're going to have a jar out for donations and donations keep trickling in," Kutz said.

The downtown merchants extended a thank-you to the following individuals who had donated: Jim and Sue Genthner, Northside Mobil, Brad Alexander, Bill Andrews, Lift Bridge Book Shop, Arjuna Florist, George and Rosie Rich, Design Frame Shop, Brockport Computer, Joan and Jim Hamlin, John Izzo, Christine Mazzarella, Wilma Nettnin, Ed Riley, Hector the Barber, Mexican Food Shop, Ian Mackler, Barb Noble, Kalyani Madhu, Bruce Leslie, Tamara and Tyler Barrus, Wanda Farrell, Bonnie Haymon, Katherine Weston, Harry and Deanna Shifton, Village Hair Design, Bob Canham and Mary Pat Musselman.
