Sweden hosts opening and free event for disc golf course

The Town of Sweden will hold a grand opening of its new disc golf course on Saturday, July 22, at 11 a.m. at the Sweden Town Park. The event will include demonstrations of game play, free commemorative discs (while supplies last) and the opportunity to play on Sweden's new 18-basket course.

Disc golf is played much like the game of golf. The object is to land a disc inside a basket in as few shots as possible. Players start each hole from a "tee" and end at an elevated basket. Sweden's course features two wooded sections of the park and many natural obstacles. The course is well-marked, beginning and ending near the main concession stand/restroom facility.

Volunteers Ron Raleigh, Dave Thomas, Bob Ellis and Todd Ellis have been responsible for the installation of the course at Sweden Town Park. They planned the lay-out of the course, cleared paths through the woods and installed the baskets. "The town is very appreciative of their efforts," said Councilman Thomas Ferris. "A new park activity is now available for our residents at very little cost to the town because of these volunteers."

Disc golf is suitable for all ages and abilities. No expensive equipment is needed and there are no greens fees at the Sweden course. The disc golf park is open whenever the Town Park is open, generally from 7 a.m. to dusk.
