Clarkson women take to the streets in a Boston breast cancer marathon
Fran Wilcox has trained since February to get in shape for a three-day, 60-mile walk at the Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation. Yet, she said the thing that concerns her most is not the walk but the camping out. more

Learning to live with chronic pain
For more than four million Americans with chronic nerve pain, a burning feeling, pins and needles or numbness are more than passing sensations, according to Penney Cowan, executive director of the American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA). "People may not realize that these feelings are symptoms of chronic neuropathic or nerve pain, that should be taken seriously," she said. The symptoms are often hard to describe to a doctor because they feel very different from pain associated with an injury or sore muscles, Cowan said. more

Many hands help pull Murray event together
The Murray Tractor Pull has many hands which help 'pull' the event together. Members of the Fancher Hulberton Murray Fire Company and Ladies Auxiliary, Holley Fire Department, Central Orleans Volunteer Ambulance (C.O.V.A.), St. Mary Church in Holley and friends and family of the founder of the event, Lloyd Christ, help in various ways. more

Spencerport approves property purchases
Public access and street widening were the motivators for the Village of Spencerport purchasing the Diehl property at 126 South Union Street and property and easements on Evergreen Street. The purchases are not to exceed $40,000. more

Anniversary worship service planned
On July 30, at 10 a.m., Pastor Alan Dailey will lead the worship service at the Thomson's Tavern in the Genesee Country Village and Museum to celebrate the 200th anniversary what is now known as The First Congregational Church of Riga, UCC. The service is open to the public. more

On Saturday, June 17, members of the 7th District VFW Ladies Auxiliary visited the patients at the Batavia VAMC and presented veterans with gift packages in honor of Father's Day. more

The Byron-Bergen Central School District Board of Education held its re-organizational meeting on July 13 at which time members re-elected Ernest Haywood as president and Lori Nelson as vice president for the 2006-2007 school year. more

Brockport students raise money for diabetes research
Brockport A.D. Oliver Middle School seventh graders Kaytlyn Fauci and Abbi Rice worked with Barb Harrington, health teacher, and Linda Binion, administrative intern, to plan times and walking routes for each grade level during a Walk for Diabetes event on the last day of school. more

Brockport is venue for Student Art Exhibitions
Brockport's Welcome Center just became a little more welcoming. So did Main Street and the Village Hall. A three-component exhibition put on by the New York State Summer School of the Arts, is now being displayed on the Main Street banner poles, at the Welcome Center, and at the village offices. more

Chili Senior Center programs
Defensive Driving - offered at the Chili Senior Center on September 19 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Additional classes will be held on October 17 and 20, November 14 and 17. There will be no classes in December. $10 per person. Must register in advance. more

Defensive Driving Course offered to those 50 years and older
The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and St. Leo Catholic Church, Hilton, are sponsoring a defensive driving program for anyone age 50 or more. The 55 Alive/Mature Driving program will be conducted at St. Leo's Parish Center on Saturday, July 29 and Saturday, August 5 from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. more

Girls Sports Festival registration deadline August 9
The 9th annual Monroe County Girls' Sports Festival, presented by Frontier, will be held on Saturday, August 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at ESL Sports Centre at Monroe Community College. The festival is sponsored in part by the Monroe County Sports Commission. more

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge to host classes for hunters
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Alabama and Shelby, New York will host two Hunter Education Waterfowl Identification classes on Tuesday, August 15 and Thursday, August 17. Both classes will be held at the refuge headquarters building at 1101 Casey Road, Alabama and will run from 7 p.m. until approximately 11 p.m. There is no charge, but attendance will be limited to 65 people per class so registration is required. more

Local athletes staying home for Empire State Games
Rochester is playing host to the Empire State Games for the third time in the 29-year history of the event and the first time since 1998. 6,000 athletes and coaches will participate in 63 sports at the scholastic, open and master's levels during the five-day event beginning with the Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, July 26 at PAETEC Park. more
