Brockport students raise money for diabetes research

Brockport A.D. Oliver Middle School seventh graders Kaytlyn Fauci and Abbi Rice worked with Barb Harrington, health teacher, and Linda Binion, administrative intern, to plan times and walking routes for each grade level during a Walk for Diabetes event on the last day of school. Fauci and Rice presented Mac McGonigle, ambassador from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, with a check for $1,016.34 at the closing ceremonies during their field day activities on June 20. Students collected money for diabetes research in a number of fundraising activities leading up to the culminating walk.

"The students were excited about the end of the year activities, which included a picnic lunch, an awards ceremony, a little dancing and the start of a new tradition - the passing of the key," said Principal Rob Banzer. "The highlight of the day was the presentation of the check to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation."

The duo has plans for a "Walk for Diabetes" event for next year. "We would even come back to help out once we're in high school," Rice said. "We really want to thank the community for coming together for an important cause. Many people donated money and area businesses donated prizes."
