Hawks drop opener in girls soccer

Starting just four seniors, Holley began the 2006 season with a 6-0 loss to Class A Newark as the Hawks hosted a season opening girl's soccer tournament.

The Lady Reds scored in the 14th minute and added two goals just before the half to take a 3-0 lead. They tacked on three more in the second half for the win. Carlie Collins led Newark with two goals and two assists while Maggie Vankouwenberg chipped in two goals.

Holley managed just a pair of corner kicks in the match highlighted by several saves by senior goalkeeper Lisa Barrett on point-blank shots. The team lost the consolation game to Alexander.

"I'm shooting for midseason," said Holley head coach Jill Mann about her young team that fielded six freshmen most of the game. "We're still trying to find the best positions for some of our players. As a group, they haven't played together very much, so by midseason we should have a better picture."

The Hawks are coming off an 11-8-2 season before losing in last year's sectional playoffs in the semi-finals to Greece Odyssey. The team lost eight starters to graduation, with five of them going on to play in college programs this fall.

Senior Stacy Swabb, third in scoring last season, and freshman Emily Troup return at midfield. Other senior starters for the opener were Alyssa Dillon, Lisa Fantasia, Ashli Couch and Barrett.
