Newsmakers for the week of
September 17, 2006


Elizabeth Gangale of Ogden, a Level 8 gymnast at The Victors Gymnastics of Greece, qualified to represent Region 6 at the National TOPS Testing to be held at Bela Karolyi's National Team Training Center in Houston, Texas in September. She earned her spot as one of the top 100 ten year olds in the United States by qualifying at the Regional Testing held in Ithaca at Finger Lakes Gymnastics Academy in July. This year is the second straight year that she qualified to compete at TOPS Nationals.


Jessica Fertitta of Hilton, a student at Wells College in Aurora, NY, is playing for the Wells Field Hockey team during the fall 2006 semester. She is the daughter of Joseph and Susan Fertitta of Hilton.


The following students have been promoted in the art of Karate by Kyoshi Mark A. Caparco of Caparco Martial Arts: Emily Egan and Zach Maier ranked to first degree Black Belt. James Reece was ranked to first degree Black Belt in Japanese Swordsmanship.


Molly Plovanich of Hamlin was named to the dean's list for the spring 2006 semester at The Johns Hopkins University. To be selected for this honor, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Plovanich is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Plovanich. Plovanich, who is majoring in arts and sciences pre-major, is expected to graduate in May 2009.


Dr. Kathleen M. Sinel has been appointed Vice President for Finance and Operations at Genesee Community College. She begins her duties at Genesee on September 25.

She succeeds Patrick E. Richey, who left Genesee in August to serve as Vice President for Finance and Administration at Canisius College in Buffalo.


Air Force Airman 1st Class James Davis has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

He is the son of Stuart and Laura Davis of Hamlin Center Road, Hilton, and a 2001 graduate of Hilton Central High School.
