A local high school student could win a trip to Washington, DC and $30,000 scholarship

Commander Richard Gross of the Monroe County Council of the Veterans of Foreign Wars said this year's VFW and Ladies Auxiliary "Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition" is underway. High school students can compete in the annual audio essay competition and win scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C.

Students begin by competing at the local post level. Deadline for entries at the post is November 1. Post winners advance to district competition and those winners compete in the state competition. The state winner will enjoy a four-day tour of Washington, D.C. along with the winners from every state, the District of Columbia, the Pacific Area, Latin America/Caribbean and Europe.

Students compete by writing and then recording a three to five minute audio essay expressing their views of this year's patriotic theme "Freedom's Challenge." All state winners receive at least $1,000 national scholarship but any one of them could win the $30,000 first place award.

Interested students and teachers can contact Commander Richard Gross, 436-6130, or write to Veterans of Foreign Wars Headquarters, 200 West Avenue, Rochester 14611 for information.
