Library hosts censorship exhibit

The Ogden Farmers' Library and the Long Island Coalition Against Censorship sponsor an exhibit, Censorship in Schools and Libraries, which will run at the library from October 2 through October 26. The library is located at 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport.

The exhibit is an illustrated journal display that documents the challenges to freedom of expression in the United States during the past 100 years. Thirty cases of censorship are presented along with documentation and illustrations. These cases include challenges to such books as Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak, The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Sallnger, the novels of Judy Blume, and the popular Harry Potter series. U.S. Supreme Court and lower court decisions regarding censorship are an integral part of the exhibit.

The exhibit is an educational project of the Long Island Coalition Against Censorship. The Coalition is a non-profit association of 22 community and educational organizations which have joined together to oppose censorship and to defend the rights of free speech and free press guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
