Hilton's Bret Clark crosses the goal line against Webster Schroeder.

Thursday night lights-out for Webster Schroeder

Coming off a disappointing loss to Churchville-Chili, the Hilton Cadet Football team faced consecutive games against Webster Schroeder and Webster Thomas.

Under the lights of Hilton's LeBeau Field, the Cadets faced off against the Webster Schroeder Warriors on Thursday, September 20. After a scoreless first quarter, the Cadets turned the momentum their way with a strong defensive set of downs which included a batted pass by Andy Ellsworth. With 5:18 left in the half, the Cadets took over on Webster's 30-yard line. QB Alex Coffey took the lead with a 12-yard run, followed by short yardage gains setting up first-and-goal on the 5-yard line. Coffey handed off to Jeff Delong, who has stopped by Webster's defense at the line of scrimmage. On second down, Coffey again handed off to Delong who scored with 3:21 left in the half. Ellsworth converted the kick. The ensuing kickoff left Schroeder deep in Hilton territory and they were forced to punt, which was returned by Hilton's Bret Clark.

Coffey wasted no time marching the Cadets downfield in an offensive series that included an 18-yard pass reception by Andy Eichas, a handoff to Jeff Delong (six yard gain) and another pass to Eichas which set up first-and-ten on the 11-yard line. After fumbling and recovering on first down, Coffey connected with #17 Bret Clark in the end zone with 50 seconds left in the half. Ellsworth kicked the pass after touchdown and Hilton led 14-0 at the half.

Webster Schroeder came close to scoring at the five minute mark in the third quarter but on fourth and goal on the two yard line, Hilton's Scott Allis intercepted the pass deep in the end zone and ran it back 50 yards to the 48-yard line.

Late in the fourth quarter, Coffey ran 62 yards up the middle to score (kick blocked). A late interception by Hilton's Eli Towner set up the Cadets with good field position, but the Cadets were unable to convert on downs. With 2:39 left in the game, Webster Schroeder took over but never threatened, as Hilton's defense, led by Scott Allis and Joe Rotella, shut them down. The Cadets hosted the Webster Thomas Titans on Friday, September 29 (Homecoming) and travel to Greece Olympia on Saturday, October 7, for their last regular season game.

Coffey had 130 yards rushing and passed for 69 yards (7 for 9). Scott Allis had 11 tackles and a 50-yard interception and Joe Rotella had nine tackles.
