Chili offers leaf disposal options

Because wet leaves do not lend themselves to easily being picked up by the leaf vacuum equipment, Town of Chili officials are encouraging residents to take advantage of several other options: Compost small amounts of leaves in backyards or bag leaves and drop them off at the designated site behind the Chili Highway Garage at 3235 Chili Avenue.

Town officials advise that the town collection service is for bulk pick up only. Residents should not bag or place leaves in containers or the leaf vacuum equipment will not pick it up. Do not place leaves on the paved road surface and do not obstruct drainage facilities. The town recycles the leaves into compost and asks that residents do not contaminate the leaves with any foreign objects or substances.

Chili officials note that over the past few years, there has been an increase in the number of residents who place the leaves on the highway, thus causing dangerous driving conditions. Wet leaves are very slick and make it harder for vehicles and bicyclists to stop quickly.
