Canal 'clean sweep' completed
The Adopt-A-Trail program for the Town of Sweden completed its fifth season on October 28 with an end-of–season sweep of the Erie Canal towpath in the town. The volunteers do litter control and light maintenance of the trail. Eight organizations each are responsible for one section of the trail; the same organizations have served all five years. more

Station One returns to center-village location
Though the quarters are a bit cramped and the vehicles ‘just fit,’ some Spencerport Volunter Firemen’s Association members donned their parade-finest Class A dress uniforms for a housewarming and ribbon cutting at their new headquarters Saturday morning, October 28. more

Sweden officials pursue senior center meals changes
Town of Sweden officials met with representatives from the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ABVI) to discuss the proposed switch in the Sweden Senior Center's meal program. more

UMMC receives business award recognition
College Tech Prep, part of Genesee Community College's Accelerated College Enrollment program (ACE) successfully nominated United Memorial Medical Center for a "Business of the Year" award. At last weekend's annual Tech Prep State Conference, UMMC's coordinators of the Genesee's Health Careers Academy were recognized as one of the top tech prep business partners in the state. more

Village of Brockport receives public works award
The New York State Conference of Mayors (NYCOM) recognized the Village of Brockport, Mayor Mort Wexler and the Village Board of Trustees for Harvester Park and Welcome Center by designating them the winners of the 2006 NYCOM Pride in Public Works Award. more

A Day of Caring
More than 20 adult community volunteers and 90 middle school students gathered on October 28 in the Village of Spencerport, braved the rain and participated in the Annual Day of Caring. more

Asset Club raises funds for Hamlin playground
On Friday, October 13, the Asset Club along with the Hamlin Playground Committee held a dance for youth at the Hamlin Exempts Building. The "Spooktakular Dance" raised funds to help renovate the Hamlin playground. more

Two vie for one justice seat in Clarkson
Samantha Golden is taking a second run at the justice seat in the Town of Clarkson elections - she was defeated in 2005. Christopher Wilcox, who sits on the bench, is seeking election to the seat to which he was appointed earlier this year. more

Voters in Districts 3 and 13 in Parma
advised of change to polling place access

Town of Parma voters in Election Districts 3 and 13 who vote at St. Paul Lutheran School/Church are asked to enter the building at the church's new east entrance. In the past voters have been able to enter through the school using the west and north entrances. These doors will no longer be accessible to the public. more

What started as the H.E.R.O. Project (Helping out in Emergencies, Reaching out to Others) in 2002, turned into a student-led organization called the Byron-Bergen Emergency Response Team (BBERT). Now in its fifth year of operation, (BBERT) has been nominated for the Harris Wofford Organization Award. more

BOCES 2 names Crystal Apple winner
Judy Hoke, Occupational and Physical Therapy Department chair, will receive the BOCES 2 Crystal Apple Award. Hoke is the fourth person ever to receive the organization's prestigious award. more

Hilton High School English teacher
named Teacher of the Year
Hilton Central Schools Teacher of the Year is 12-year veteran Hilton High School English teacher, Linda Bohrer. Upon accepting her award in September before an auditorium of staff members at the high school from the Hilton Central Schools Teacher Association, Bohrer said, "My two boys paved the way and were an inspiration to me. more

Hilton names school-related professional of the year
Hilton High School Teaching Assistant Kathy Snyder has been named School-Related Professional of the Year by a committee of her peers for the 2006-07 year. more

Hilton school report available for inspection
The 2005-2006 Audit Report, Management Letter and District Correction Action Plan for the Hilton Central School District is available for public inspection from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the business office, 225 West Avenue, Hilton.

New assistant principal begins at Holley Elementary
Holley Elementary School welcomed William Ottman as assistant principal on October 6. Prior to joining the Holley School District, Ottman was director of science for East Irondequoit Central Schools. He's also worked for Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES as a science instructional specialist and for Strasenburgh Planetarium as a science teacher. more

SUNY College at Brockport's Holiday Helping Hand benefits local families
SUNY College at Brockport continues its history of providing local families with assistance during the holiday season. Families are chosen from suggestions by social workers at the Brockport and Holley school districts, the Brockport Child Care Center and personal contacts. more


In Sports:

Blue Devils return to title game
Brockport jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 27 minutes and held on to defeat Churchville-Chili 3-2 in the Section V boy's soccer semi-finals. The win means the Blue Devils and Fairport meet in the AAA championship in a rematch of last season's final. more

Good sports
Holley School District sports teams, their coaches and fans were recognized with the Good Sports Section Award for the third time. more

Gymnastics hosts regional clinics
Bright Raven Gymnastics was selected for the seventh year to be the site for two regional gymnastics clinics. The event opened on Friday, October 20 with "Working Together for Nationals" where former Level 9 and 10 Junior Olympic USA Gymnastics Regional and National qualifiers were invited to train together with top coaches. more

Oklahoma gold wrestling weekend
SUNY Brockport will host the seventh annual Oklahoma Gold Wrestling Tournament November 11 in the Tuttle North Gymnasium. The event features Division I programs from the University of Oklahoma, Army, Bloomsburg, Brown University, University of Buffalo, Kent State and Rutgers. more
