Holley students, staff enjoy fresh produce from local farms

Locally grown produce was brought into the Holley Elementary School for a week in October to promote healthy eating and support local growers. The "Down on the Farm" partnership provided fresh produce to students and staff throughout the district.

At the elementary school, the Spirit Committee encouraged students and staff to dress like farmers and scarecrows for the event. The committee designates a special day each month for a school-wide activity and chose "Down on the Farm" for October. Classes were invited to make a dish with fresh fruits or vegetables. Loretta Herman's fourth graders made apple/cranberry bread; Marge Burgio's second graders created salsa; and Lynn Vendetti's fourth graders stirred up some apple/cherry bread. The cafeteria staff helped out by doing the baking. Vendetti, whose family owns a farm, donated pumpkins that decorated the cafeteria, then were moved to the courtyard for Pre-K students to pick and take home. Debbie DeLorenzo, district courier, painted barn, cow and pig figures to add to the farm-like atmosphere. And Brandi Zavitz, along with her high school art students, created fruit and veggie signs for both schools.
