BOCES names new chief
Dr. Michael O'Laughlin, Kendall superintendent, has been named the next Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES District Superintendent. After hours of deliberation, the BOCES Board selected O'Laughlin as the fifth district superintendent in the organization's history. more

NY Sea Grant Coastal Communities Specialist
to help protect freshwater resources

The New York Sea Grant has hired John Herring as a coastal communities specialist. Herring will work out of Sea Grant's Buffalo office, one of three Great Lakes region office in New York. more

Residents make use of FOIL access to information
On October 24, state legislators paved the way for citizens to file a Freedom of Information (FOIL) request via-e-mail, a change in the law that Committee on Open Government Executive Director Robert Freeman said he "never dreamed" he would see, but one that he believes will "make a huge difference" in how the law is used. more

presents plans for new Station One

The plans for a new firehouse in the Village of Spencerport were underway even before the disastrous August 11 fire destroyed Spencerport Fire District's Station One on Lyell Avenue. more

In addition to the mastery of the Dewey Decimal system, library directors and staff act as the buyers of fresh and weeders of outdated stock, tasks that themselves require countless hours of reading: library journals, bestseller lists, publisher magazines, and other data. more

Walk to School Day deemed a success
Five out of six people enjoyed the Village of Brockport's first Walk to School Day event on October 4, according to survey results. The Walk to School Committee of the Walk! Bike! Brockport action group, chaired by Dr. Jim Goetz, Sara Silverstone and Dave Ball, gathered up volunteers and spread the word to school children in the Brockport School District to give up the bus and car and take to their feet as a way to get to school. more

Batavia resident elected president of GCC Foundation
The Board of Directors of the Genesee Community College Foundation elected John C. Dwyer president of the foundation at its annual meeting November 14. Dwyer is a Batavia resident. He is a former CEO of the Genesee County Industrial Development Agency (now Genesee County Economic Development Center) and former co-owner of Thomas and Dwyer Shoes. more

Students at Spencerport's Canal View Elementary School raised money in a "Pennies for Pencils" drive to benefit the orphans of Miracle Garden Tsunami Children's home in India. more

Spencerport teacher finalist for Presidential Award
Heather Shaw, a teacher at Spencerport's Canal View Elementary School, is a state-level finalist for this year's Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The National Science Foundation (NSF) administers the program on behalf of the White House. more

On October 21, 2006, Brockport Golden Eagle freshman goaltender Todd Sheridan officially completed his comeback. On that Saturday, with his family in the stands, he registered his first collegiate victory as the Golden Eagles came from behind to defeat Buffalo State 5-3. more

B-B wins third volleyball championship
Alyssa D’Errico and Shavaughn Bartz were named to the All-Tournament Team as Byron-Bergen defeated Lansing from Section IV to win their third consecutive New York State Class C girl’s volleyball championship. more

Coaches vs Cancer Tournament Dec. 1 & 2
The American Cancer Society, Wendy's Restaurants of Rochester, LaMont's Awards and Apparel, and Spencerport Central School District will be hosting the 10th Annual Coaches vs Cancer Boys Basketball Tournament on December 1 and 2 at Spencerport High School. more

Gymnasts win at Judges' Cup
The Victors Gymnastics Team of Greece competed in the 26th Annual Judges' Cup Invitational on November 18 and 19 in Rochester. The Victors' Team placed first overall in both the Compulsory Team and the Optional Team competitions. more

Hilton High School Sports Hall of Fame to induct five
Hilton High School Sports Hall of Fame has selected five new members to be inducted this year. Induction ceremonies will be held Thursday, December 29 beginning with a reception at 6 p.m. in the upstairs Commons area of Hilton High School, 400 East Avenue, Hilton, followed by a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. and the Holiday Basketball Tournament in the gymnasium. Admission is free and the public is invited. more
