Recycle cell phones at Seymour Library

Americans replace their cell phones every 12 months. Cell phones contain toxic substances like arsenic, cadmium, lead and zinc which can leach into groundwater from landfills and form highly dangerous dioxins if they are incinerated. The cadmium from a single phone is capable of polluting 158,000 gallons of water.

Recycle old and unused cell phones by donating the phones to "Phones for Funds," an initiative of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester. For every phone recycled, the Cancer Center could receive up to $300 per phone.

Seymour Library, at 161 East Avenue, Brockport, will have a drop box available for accepting cell phones through January 16.
