One assessment roll to serve
Village of Brockport and Town of Sweden

The Village of Brockport has turned its assessment function over to the Town of Sweden, a move that will eliminate some duplication of services and also cause less confusion for village property owners. In the past the Town of Sweden set property assessments in the village for use in computing town, county and school taxes. The village established its own property assessments for use in computing village taxes. In most cases the village assessment was the same as the town assessment, however, some properties had a different assessment.

Now, all properties in the village and town will have one assessment prepared by the town assessor. There will be one grievance day, held on the second Tuesday in May, for property owners who disagree with an assessment. In the past, a village property owner who disagreed might have had to appear at the village grievance day in February and again at the town grievance day in May. The new system will make grieving an assessment a simpler process for property owners.

For village property owners who have exemptions, current village exemptions have been transferred to the town; next year, village exemptions will be filed at the town offices. Procedures for exemptions on properties in the town outside the village will not change; town residents should file for exemptions exactly as they have in the past.

One very important note is that village taxes will still be paid at the Brockport Village Hall. The Town of Sweden has not assumed the tax collection function. Questions regarding the village budget and the village tax rate should be directed to Village of Brockport officials at 49 State Street, 637-5300. Questions about assessments and exemptions should be directed to the Sweden assessor at 18 State Street, 637-8683.
