Bridges named in honor of former Gates supervisor

The eastbound and westbound bridges of I-490 that span the Erie Canal have been renamed the "Supervisor Jack C. Hart Memorial Bridges." These crossings link the Town of Gates and the City of Rochester. "Supervisor Hart established a legacy of public service that is honorable and worthy of special recognition," Senator George Maziarz said. "For many years, he worked day in and day out to improve the lives of citizens of the Town of Gates. He was a dedicated, respected, and humble leader. His contributions deserve to be remembered today."

Hart was the Supervisor of the Town of Gates for 15 years, making him the longest serving supervisor in the history of the town when he retired in 1989. A World War II veteran, Hart oversaw many improvements in his community. During his 50 years of life in the town, he was active in many organizations, notably including 12 years working on the Gates planning and zoning boards.

Current Supervisor Ralph Esposito said, "It was an honor to succeed Jack Hart as supervisor of the town in 1989. He worked tirelessly on behalf of the residents of Gates, and he set a high standard of performance for all future supervisors."

Gates Town Councilman Greg Hart, son of the late supervisor, said, "This is a proud moment for the Hart family. We wish to thank Senator Maziarz and Assemblyman David Gantt for their efforts in sponsoring the legislation necessary to make this designation a reality. Jack loved his community and worked tirelessly for more than 40 years in service to the Town of Gates and its residents. To honor our father's legacy of public service in such a significant fashion is truly a very high honor."

Highway markers will be installed this month by the New York State Department of Transportation.
