Bees' Long breaks own record

Byron-Bergen junior Emma Long shattered her own school record in the 100-yard butterfly, but the Bees dropped both the girls and boys swimming meets to Pembroke.

Long swam the butterfly in 1:07.79. After getting out of the pool, she hugged her mother and ran straight to the record board at the far end of the pool and removed the previous best time listed next to her name.

She was also part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team with Naomi Hickey, Karisa Kobel and Samantha Peters in 1:54.54. Kobel took first in the 50-yard freestyle in :27.84, but the Dragons squeaked out a 95-80 victory. Bees sophomore Lauren Mullen was the only female competitor in diving and garnered 70 points.

In the boys competition, freshman Sean O'Neill won both the 200-yard Individual Medley in 2:19.14 and the 100-yard breastroke in 1:14.30. He was also with the winning 200-yard Medley Relay team with Trent Jeffords, John Hickey and Baxter Ritsema in 2:03.80.

Freshman Carl Crassi showed a great finish kick to overcome a substantial deficit over the final lap and a half to win the 500-yard freestyle in 6:37.36. Jeffords took first in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:12.86 and Nick Haywood the diving as the only male entry with 75 points.
