Benefit scheduled for Hamlin toddler

Vinny Vandetta, of Hamlin, is an 18-month-old lovable toddler who was diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Type A, a rare disease.

Niemann-Pick disease refers to a group of inherited metabolic disorders known as the lipid storage diseases in which harmful quantities of a fatty substance (lipids) accumulate in the spleen, liver, lungs, bone marrow and the brain. Symptoms include lack of muscle coordination, brain degeneration, learning problems, loss of muscle tone, increased sensitivity to touch, spasticity, feeding and swallowing difficulties, slurred speech and an enlarged liver and spleen.

The disease has four related types. Vinny has Type A which occurs in infants. It is characterized by jaundice, an enlarged liver, and profound brain damage. Children with this type rarely live beyond 18-36 months.

Following a long wait, Vinny was adopted by the Vandetta Family of Hamlin when he was a newborn. The family dreamed of a happy healthy future with their newborn. During Vinny's first year with the family, he started experiencing medical problems. Initially it appeared to be development delays but tests this November revealed it was much more. His disease is terminal.

To help the family with the overwhelming and mounting medical expenses, there will be a benefit spaghetti dinner at the Brockport Elks Lodge on Saturday, January 20. The event starts at 3 and ends at 7 p.m. In addition to the dinner, this family event will also have a DJ, silent auction, bake sale and children's activities. Tickets are $5. All proceeds will be used to help with Vinny's care.

Donations are also being accepted at HSBC Bank, 1848 Empire Boulevard, Webster or at the event. For information contact Doug Vandetta at 585-233-8439 or email VinnyVandetta@yahoo.com. (submitted material).
