GCC Student Union receives
American Institute of Architects award

The Eastern New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects conferred an AIA (American Institute of Architects) design award on Genesee Community College's Wolcott J. Humphrey III Student Union, which opened a year ago. Robert Joy, president of Joy, McCoola & Zilch, the Glens Falls architectural firm that designed the building, brought news of the award to the college's board of trustees and presented Board Chair Marcia H. Noonan with a framed AIA certificate.

As is the custom with AIA awards, the building's specifications and photographs were submitted without identifying information to an AIA panel outside of the region. A "blind" panel of architects recommended the award on the basis of the building's functionality and innovation in design. The 10,500 square foot Wolcott J. Humphrey III Student Union opened January 18, 2006. It provides meeting space for student clubs and organizations, as well as flexible space that can be used for student programs and informal student gatherings.
