Spencerport Rangers basketball teams and cheerleaders donate to American Cancer Society

Spencerport Central Schools, along with sponsors of Wendy's Restaurants of Rochester, Lamont's Awards and Apparel and the American Cancer Society, hosted its 10th annual Coaches vs Cancer Boys Basketball Tournament on December 1 and 2 and the 16th Annual Coach Chow Classic on December 27 and 28 at Spencerport High School.

The boys CVC tournament featured local teams Brighton, Penfield and Brockport along with host Spencerport, and the girls Coach Chow Classic participants were westside rivals Brockport, Churchville-Chili, Gates Chili and host Spencerport.

Proceeds from the tournaments are donated to the American Cancer Society in the names of Coaches vs Cancer, Coach Don Wierzchowski and Joe Martuscello. Coaches vs Cancer is affiliated with the National Association of Basketball Coaches and was formed to honor the late Jim Valvano, a college basketball coach and ESPN announcer who passed away from cancer. Wierzchowski was a long-time successful girls' basketball coach who passed way from pancreatic cancer in May 2002. Martuscello passed away in November from cancer was a parent of two Spencerport student-athletes and was very involved and supportive of community sports.

A donation of $2,462 will be given to the American Cancer Society from this year's tournaments making a 10 year total of over $44,000. The presentations will take place at the Boys Basketball game on February 7 at 7:30 p.m. and at the Girls Basketball game on February 8 at 7:30 p.m.
