Local update of Census Addresses
(LUCA) workshop planned

A free informational session is planned for elected officials; municipal boards, staff and officials; county boards, staff, and officials, interested citizens to show ways to help ensure accurate population counts for census purposes. The session will explain how the census is conducted and introduce the 2010 Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) program.

Register by sending an e-mail to jbreschard@gflrpc.org.

LUCA is the only opportunity for local governments to enhance the accuracy of the census by providing the Census Bureau with an updated list of residential addresses. An updated list ensures that census mailings will reach as many households as possible.

Accurate population counts determine: reapportionment of Congressional seats (New York State lost a Congressional seat in 2000); redistricting of State Legislative Districts; municipal infrastructure planning; per capita funding allocation, federal and state grant allocation; transportation planning; health care planning and many other decisions based on population and socio-economic characteristics.

Workshop dates locally include: March 6, Orleans County Office Building, 9 a.m. to noon; March 6, Monroe County CCE, 2 to 5 p.m.; March 8, Genesee County Emergency Management Office, 9 a.m. to noon.
