GCC history students seek notable photographs

History students at Genesee Community College are working on a semester-long project focusing on the history of New York state. Of particular interest is how Genesee Community College has played a role in the development of the four-county service area including Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties.

The students enrolled in the new course, entitled, New York State History (HIS 211), are taught by Garth Swanson, and together they are requesting community input for their project. Of particular interest are any photographs showing Genesee Community College's six locations at any point during its 40-year history.

Authorized by a Genesee County voter referendum in November 1965, chartered in 1966, and open with its first campus location in Batavia in 1967, Genesee Community College is one of only two voter-established community colleges in New York state. After setting up the Batavia Campus, Genesee Community College expanded into neighboring counties with the first campus center opening in Albion in 1990, a second in Warsaw in 1991, then Lakeville in 1992, Arcade in 1995 and Dansville in 2002. A seventh Campus Center will be opening in Medina this summer.

Anyone with relevant photographs or information to share can contact Garth Swanson, Instructor of History, at (585) 343-0055, x 6291 or gpswanson@genesee.edu by March 2. Images will be scanned and returned to the contributors, who will be collectively recognized in the project's final program at the end of the semester.
