Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce recognizes honorees at annual dinner

The Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce held their annual awards dinner on January 26 at Plantation Party House. Over 200 people attended.

Those recognized included Dave Resch, owner of Resch Auto Service, recipient of the Business Person of the Year; Jim Powell, who along with the Unity Lodge Free and Accepted Masons, received the Civic Beautification Award for the planting and maintaining of the flower garden area located on Route 531 at the Gillett Road overpass; and Julie and Jeff Tewksbury, who received the Clyde W. Carter Citizens of the Year for their thousands of hours of volunteer service provided to the Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance and other organizations.

Two others received Certificates of Appreciation from the chamber for their efforts in the community. Floyd Seeley, former owner of Seal's Auto Parts in Spencerport, was honored for his participation in the business community and for his generous contributions of time, energy and talents entertaining children and adults, especially those with special needs, as “Seal The Clown.” In full clown costume, toting stuffed animals and creating balloon figures, Seal wins smiles from all around and brings amusement, laughter and love. His outreach efforts, done quietly, with dignity and in an assuming manner over many years, were recognized for demonstrating his compassion for his fellow man.

Richard D. (Rich) McQuilkin and fellow members of the Spencerport Volunteer Fire Department were honored for their quick response that saved the fire trucks and other apparatus housed at Station 1 on Lyell Avenue on the morning of August 11, 2006 when their own fire house was consumed by fire. McQuilkin’s activation of the garage bay overhead door openers before the fire engulfing the building cutout the electrical supply allowed him and other early responders, including Adam Salamone, Tim Stevely, Jeff Tewksbury and Charlie Davis, to move the trucks from the burning building.

Additionally, Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce members and dinner attendees noted milestones for the Spencerport Lions Club, Roberts Wesleyan College and Ogden Presbyterian Church which celebrated a 50th birthday, a 140th birthday and a 195th birthday, respectively, in 2006.

The chamber invites nominations from the community for their annual awards presentations.
