April planting event will increase Brockport's trees
One of the missions of the Brockport Tree Board is to "promote public awareness of the importance of urban forests through education, community plantings and maintenance of new trees." Toward that end, the board received a grant for $7,400 which will pay for the purchase of 38 new trees. more

With an eye on the future, members of the Marketing Sub-committee of the Main Street Reconstruction Committee (MSRC) in the Village of Brockport gathered for a brainstorming session on February 12. more

Churchville-Riga Chamber dinner March 8

The Churchville-Riga community will gather Thursday, March 8 to recognize the outstanding work of several of its residents. The Greater Churchville-Riga Chamber of Commerce will present its 2006 awards at the group's annual dinner at the Johnson House Restaurant. more

Longtime Churchville mayor decides to step down
For more than 25 years, Don Ehrmentraut has been a pillar in the Village of Churchville community where he has served as its mayor for 20 of those years. "When I began my career with the village I had the firm foundation that was laid down before me by my predecessors," he said. more

NYS Assemblyman Bill Reilich joined Monroe County Legislator and local farm owner Robert Colby (right) at the New York State Farm Bureau's "Taste of New York" reception. During the reception, Reilich honored Colby Farms as a member of New York State's Agricultural Society and as a celebrated Bicentennial Farm. more

Fairbanks Road School to hold benefits for aplastic anemia
Students and staff at Churchville-Chili Central School District's Fairbanks Road Elementary School are coming together to plan a number of events to help fight aplastic anemia. more

Hilton student diagnosed with whooping cough
A student in the Hilton High School was diagnosed with whooping cough (pertussis), a highly contagious respiratory tract disease. A letter was sent home to parents on February 12 from the Monroe County Department of Health telling them of the student's diagnosis, what type symptoms to look for in their own children and an information sheet on the disease. more

Holley sixth graders tour history
A series of field trips by Holley sixth grade classes had students traveling through time. Each class began their trip at the Challenger Learning Center, a state of the art math, science and technology education facility at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. more

Recycle More, Take Out The Garbage Less
Ecology Club President Matt Walter holds a full recycling basket of plastic bottles in the foyer of Miner Hall, a Roberts Wesleyan College male student dorm. Matt says: "The RecycleMania drive is going well so far and better here than some of the other schools participating in the drive." more

Spencerport hosts college admissions information night
School counselors from the Spencerport, Brockport, Hilton, Holley and Kendall school districts will present an information night on college admissions. A panel of admissions officers from area public, private, two and four year colleges will discuss the admissions process, current trends and other related topics. more

Spencerport's soldier teacher
She has her orders. Sara Monnier, fourth grade teacher at Spencerport's Taylor Elementary School, reported to Fort Riley, Kansas at the end of January and her Army Reserve Unit could be in Iraq in April. Principal Monica Macaluso and the staff at Taylor honored Monnier and her family with a breakfast on Friday, January 19. more

Brockport resident receives highest Judo ranking in U.S.
The United States Judo Federation (USJF) promoted Sachio Ashida, PhD, SUNY College at Brockport associate professor of psychology emeritus, to the rank of ninth Dan, the highest Black Belt rating in the U.S. and a level Ashida shares with only two others. more

Hilton Knights of Columbus host District Free Throw
On Saturday, February 10, the Knights of Columbus, St. Leo Council #9461 in Hilton hosted the District #92 Free Throw Championships at the Quest School. Seven boys and girls will move on to the next round, hoping to make it to the state championship. more

Local boys gymnastics team wins invitational
Bright Raven Gymnastics boys teams traveled to Syracuse, February 4 to compete in the Salt City Invitational where they earned many individual honors and the second place Level 4 team award. In the Level 4 competition for ages 6 through 7, Alex Reber of Brockport captured first place all around scoring 52.10. more

Otto receives Section V Hockey Pugliese Award
Spencerport's Dan Otto was named the recipient of the Section V Pugliese Award. The Pugliese Award is given to the player who best exemplifies true sportsmanship during the hockey season. The award is voted on by each team in the division. more
