Vote March 20 on Hilton Fire Department building proposal

The Hilton Fire District has proposed a project to build a new headquarters to be located on the northeast corner of Hale Haven Drive and Old Hojack Road.

The 2.8-acre lot adjacent to St. Leo's Church was purchased by the fire department for its new facility upon approval of voters of the district.

Plans for the 24,000 square-foot building include a two-story office space, commercial kitchen, dayroom, both a men's and women's bunkroom, dispatch office, a large dividable training rom, fitness center, and a seven bay apparatus floor.

"We are currently working with an engineer and a construction manager for the layout," Commissioner John Lemcke said.

The fire department is currently located at 135 South Avenue in the heart of the village. A number of issues led to the proposal of a new building; no ventilation in the fire station, there is no fitness center, space is limited, and damages from the 2004 flood of Salmon Creek.

"There is a need for infrastructure improvements," Lemcke said.

Prior to a flood in 2003, the fire department committee looked at making improvements to the building. They began to set aside a budget for 2004. As discussions continued, the 2004 flood occurred.

"It took a turn and we needed to be looking at a different location," said Lemcke, "so the committee regrouped in 2005."

Since the mid 1800s, approximately every 30 years there is major flooding in the area adjacent to the creek. The district is currently working with SEMO, New York State Emergency Management Office, on flood mitigation trying to obtain money.

More details will be available preceding the March 20 vote on a proposition to expend $6,150,000 for the aggregate costs of construction and equipping of the new fire station facility. There is an upcoming informational meeting March 15 at the fire station. The community is invited to attend.
