"Math-A-Thon" helps skills, aids hospital

Hilton's Northwood Elementary School students raised $6,268.16 through the school's annual "Math-A-Thon" for donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, according to teacher Jerry Adduci. Students participated in the St. Jude-sponsored Math-A-Thon which involves getting sponsors and completing math, arithmetic, puzzle and hidden message problems.

The hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee, treats 180 patients a day as well as carries an out-patient clientele of over 4,700 children. In addition, basic and clinical research is carried on with the help of donations. Students can earn t-shirts and other prizes through the Math-A-Thon. "Students participating in the program learn to do more than math problems," according to a St. Jude's Hospital spokesperson. "They also learn the importance of helping children who are less fortunate than themselves."

"We are very proud of our students for working so hard on the Math-A-Thon," Adduci said. "With their help, St. Jude Hospital will be able to create new treatments that may one day lead to a cure for many forms of cancer that will benefit the children of our state, our country and around the world. I want to extend thanks to the Hilton community for supporting our students. It takes all of us to make a difference in the lives of children with cancer and we can all feel proud of our response."
