Blue Devils advance

Senior Jake Russell scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the second half, including three three-pointers in the third quarter, as Brockport defeated Canandaigua 55-48 in the first round of the Class AA Section Five boy's basketball tournament.

The game featured five ties and six lead changes through the early stages of the second quarter before the Blue Devils started to pull away. The lead became as many as 16 points in the third quarter before the Braves offense came alive in the fourth, scoring 16 points.

Russell led the Blue Devils with 17 points and hauled down eight rebounds with two blocked shots. Seniors Adam Werner converted four of his 11 points off of steals and Brandon Brechue led the team with 11 rebounds and chipped in six points. Trevor Hermance came off the bench to knock down three-pointers and finished with nine points.

Brockport improved its record to 8-13 and were to face top-seeded Brighton in the second round Friday.
