Donald Fox, chairman of the Fire Prevention Essay Committee from the Monroe County Firemen's Association, talked to students about fire safety during a surprise assembly where Brett and Lily received their awards. The contest, sponsored by the Monroe County Volunteer Firemen's Association, yielded over 2,400 entries from students in grades 5-8 throughout Monroe County.

Students wrote to the theme "Prevent Cooking Fires - Watch What You Heat!" Lily wrote about how distractions in the kitchen can be a recipe for disaster and Brett explained the different types of cooking fires. They both gave tips for how kitchen fires can be prevented.
