French Club learns about Mardi Gras

Students in Spencerport's Cosgrove Middle School French Club celebrated Mardi Gras on February 13.

Eighth-grade club member Katherine Wimer describes what students learned, "Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday" and is celebrated the day before Lent begins. On Tuesday, February 13, French Club students made Mardi Gras masks to celebrate this festival. They all got to enjoy King's Cake, which is a traditional Mardi Gras food, receive beads and win prizes. Mardi Gras came to New Orleans from France in 1699. Soon, celebrations were added along with parades and balls. Mardi Gras' official colors are purple, green and gold. They were chosen by the King of Carnival in 1872. Purple represents justice, green is faith and gold is power."
