Nancy Steedman

Trustee unopposed for Churchville Mayor post

Trustee Nancy Steedman is running unopposed for the post of mayor of Churchville. Don Ehrmentraut decided not to seek reelection to the office after serving as mayor for 20 years.

Steedman's enthusiasm and concern for the village is evident. "I love my community, I'm very proud of it, I love the people who are here," she said. Steedman said that although she is running unopposed she is "hoping to be elected mayor."

She has a long history of community service. Steedman said her involvement in village government began with working on the Beautification Committee. "Then an opening came up on the village board and I ran for the position," she said. Steedman has served as a village trustee for ten years.

Steedman worked on the Monroe County Park and Golf Course Master Plan, served as co-chair of the Comprehensive Plan committee and is also chairperson of the Charrette. The Charrette is a vision plan for the community which will be presented to residents on March 13. She said she is also particularly proud of grant writing work she has done for the village which includes a joint Town/Fire Department GIS Needs Assessment Grant.
Steedman is a Churchville Lions Club member, a lifelong member of the Union Congregational United Church of Christ on North Main Street in Churchville and is also a member of the Rochester Corvette Club.

Steedman retired in 2002 from WE-MO-CO BOCES No. 2 in Spencerport where she taught courses in computing. She has lived in the Churchville Riga area her entire life, with the exception of two years when she lived in Spencerport. Her grandmother was born in Churchville in 1892 and after a life of nearly 100 years, passed away there.

Steedman's father also grew up in Churchville and worked as greens superintendent at the Churchville Park golf course. Steedman, who is unmarried, still has many relatives in Churchville. She graduated from Churchville High School with Don Ehrmentraut. She said she hopes to continue all the good work that the village has been doing and commended Ehrmentraut for the "marvelous job" that he has done. Steedman said she has worked closely with him over the years and understands where he is coming from. She hopes to finish projects currently underway and also will be looking toward the future.

"We know growth is coming," she said and she wants to take a pro-active approach to it. Steedman said the village needs to adjust things like zoning codes to make sure everything is up-to-date and ready for growth. Current projects facing the village include a new fire hall, the taking over of a lease for Churchville Park land south of Black Creek and an electric substation upgrade.

Steedman said her trustee seat on the village board would be filled by appointment after the election.
