The award, which was presented at the fourth annual awards gala in Washington D.C. on March 13, recognizes the community's 911 Center as a leader in technology implementation and a national model for inter-governmental operations and cooperation. more

Fundraising goal reached for world health
organization's Blue Trunk project

Sara Richardson has not yet set foot in the West African nation of Mali, but she is already helping to improve the lives of the people in one of the world's poorest countries. In February, Richardson, a senior health major at SUNY Cortland, finished raising the $2,650 needed to send a Blue Trunk, a metal container filled with up-to-date medical and health information supplied by the World Health Organization (WHO) to Mali. more

Hamlin Community Center study presented to town council members
After more than four years of exploration and investigation, the Town of Hamlin's Community Center Exploratory Committee has completed its mission - the next steps need to be taken by the town council. more

Libraries host trip to teen writers festival
The second annual Greater Rochester Teen Book Festival is a day-long celebration of young adult books and authors happening Saturday, March 31 at Fairport High School. One of the few large area events planned just for teens, 11 authors are participating this year, including well-known fantasy author Tamora Pierce. more

Orleans County receives additional tasers
The Orleans County Sheriff's Office has acquired 17 additional Taser X-26 energy devices, non-lethal law enforcement weaponry. The sheriff's office now has 22. Two of the newly acquired devices were donated to the Medina Police Department. more

Petitions available for Churchville-Chili Board of Education seats
Candidates wishing to run for the Churchville-Chili Central School Board of Education must submit petitions to the district clerk on or before Monday, April 16 by 5 p.m. more

Red Cross invites blood donors to share: "Why I Donate Blood"
Governor Eliot Spitzer issued a proclamation supporting March as national Red Cross Month. The governor's statement is in keeping with this annual tradition started in 1943 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which serves to publicly recognize the humanitarian services and accomplishments of the American Red Cross. more

Spencerport prepares for sewer plant to go off-line
Plans are underway for the Village of Spencerport to take its wastewater treatment plant off-line. Alternatives for the village were to improve and upgrade the existing facility or to go off-line and turn the operation over to Monroe County Pure Waters. more

The changing face of Sweden's retail landscape
On March 13, the new 203,000 square foot super Wal-Mart opened in the Town of Sweden, less than a week after PetSmart announced it was closing its operations. more

Tickets available for Community Arts Awards Gala in April
The seventh annual Community Arts Awards Gala will be held at Genesee Community College on April 21 at 6 p.m. The Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council instituted the annual event in 2001 as a way to recognize individuals and cultural organizations that have made significant contributions to the arts in our community. more

Wind tower moratorium imposed in Hamlin
One by one, residents in the Town of Hamlin stood during the public hearing, stated their names and asked the board to approve a moratorium on wind tower construction in their town. The gymnasium in the town building was full to standing room only for the March 12 hearing. more

Work resuming on two bridges in Parma and Greece
Work resumed on the Route 261 (Manitou Road) bridge over Salmon Creek in the Town of Greece. The structure is located between Wilder Road and Curtis Road. The road closed Monday, March 12, while the bridge is under construction. Traffic will be detoured to Wilder Road, Bennett Road and Curtis Road. more

The Hilton Village Board is accepting nominations to recognize an outstanding individual who has unselfishly served the Hilton/Parma community. Submit nominations to Mayor Larry Gursslin, at 59 Henry Street, Hilton, NY 14468 no later than May 1, 2007. more

Clothing and food drive soon underway
On Saturday, March 24, the local boy scouts and girl scouts will be going out into the community to distribute bags for this year's Scouting For Food and Clothing drive. Two plastic bags, one for food and one for clothing, will be attached to door handles. more

Disc Golf fundraiser
On Saturday, February 24, the Rochester Disc Golf Association participated in the annual "Ice Bowl" which is held from New York to Hawaii. The event is played rain, snow or shine at a Rochester area disc golf course and benefits local charities with cash and food donations. more

Family Fun Fair planned
The Brockport Teacher's Association will hold it annual Family Fun Fair on Friday, March 30 from 6-9 p.m. at the A. D. Oliver Middle School lower gym. The evening will feature many games and activities including: sponge toss, face painting and cupcake walk. A snack bar will be open throughout the evening. more

Hamlin Veterans group fundraising for flags
The Hamlin Veteran's Association formed a committee to purchase new flags to line the streets of Hamlin. The group has had three fundraisers and collected donations of close to $1,000 toward the project. The goal is to collect between $2,500 and $3,000. more

Helping a family in need
The Holley Rotary Club presented a check for $2,300 to a Holley family who was in need because of a medical condition. The money was raised from the club's spaghetti dinner. Pictured are incoming club president Ron Vendetti and dinner chair Ed Morgan. more

Walk for Sight with Lions Clubs
The Lions of District 20-E1 (Genesee Region) are planning a 'Walk For Sight,' from Middleport to Palmyra, a total of 71.5 miles, beginning on April 21 and finishing on August 11. The walk will be divided into sections, and Lions Club will be in charge of their corresponding section. more

Assemblyman appointed to Joint Budget Committee on Transportation
Assemblyman Bill Reilich (134th District) was appointed to a Joint Budget Committee on Transportation to determine the amount of state funding for roads, bridges and highways in the 2007-08 state budget. more

Efforts underway to revive coalition of Great Lakes Legislators
Senator George Maziarz, 62nd District, met with fellow senators or their staff representatives from a cross-section of New York's 16 Great Lakes senate districts to revitalize the New York Coalition of Great Lakes Legislators. more

Parma Democrats seeking candidates
The Parma Democratic Committee is seeking Parma residents who are interested in serving the community by seeking an elected office in the Town of Parma. The office of town supervisor, town justice, highway superintendent and two town council seats will be up for election this November. more

Team wins Team Spirit Award

Ten students from the Churchville-Chili Junior High School and their coach, David VanSlyke, headed to St. John Fisher College Saturday, February 24, to compete in the 2007 Regional Science Olympiad Competition. more

Educational expert to speak at Byron-Bergen
Educators from the Genesee Valley BOCES region are invited to attend a series of workshops on the topic of Response To Intervention (RTI) on Friday, March 23 at Byron-Bergen High School. The guest presenter is Dr. James L. McDougal, assistant professor of counseling and psychological services at SUNY Oswego and a noted expert in the emerging field of RTI. more

GCC board reviews facilities master plan
Genesee Community College's Board of Trustees reviewed a new Facilities Master Plan that could eventually add athletic, arts and modern laboratory facilities to the Batavia Campus. The Facilities Master Plan is a guide to possible capital improvements over the next decade. more

Little Red Schoolhouse students visit post office
Postmaster Joe Bassett of the Adams Basin Post Office welcomed the students of the Little Red Schoolhouse as they mailed special Valentines to their parents. The students presented Postmaster Joe a special Valentine of his own. more

Spencerport teacher recognized for teaching innovation
Heather Shaw, a first grade teacher at Canal View Elementary School in Spencerport, is a state finalist for the 2006 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), the nation's highest honor for K-12 teaching in these fields. more

Spencerport teacher recognized as top educator
High School Language teacher Melanie Thomas earned National Board Certification, the highest credential in teaching, becoming the third teacher at Spencerport recognized among the top educators in the country. more

Brockport men's basketball makes it to elite eight
The Brockport men's basketball team took their at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, and made the best of it. The Golden Eagles won three games before falling in the sectional finals to Wooster on March 10. more

Fun with Gymnastics & Tumbling
31 young gymnasts spent their after school time performing floor exercises, vaulting, and showing off their talents on several pieces of apparatus at the Hilton Village Elementary School. more

Gymnasts win at Niagara Cup
Bright Raven Gymnastics girl's teams traveled to Buffalo March 9-11 for the 2007 Niagara Cup at Canisius College and won many individual and team honors. more

Spencerport boys in Mission Bouts
Four Spencerport area teens participated in the Aquinas Institute's 75th Annual Mission Bouts on March 3. Dan Foley and Jake Wark, ninth; Anthony Milonni, tenth grade, and Neil Foley, eleventh grade, received varsity letters. more

SUNYAC makes strong showing in ECAC Basketball Championships
Five SUNYAC basketball teams were selected to play in the men's and women's ECAC Basketball Championships that began February 28. The Brockport women and Oswego men made it to the finals, but neither could pull out the victory. more

Western New York Amateur Hockey League wins title
After going undefeated in league play (17-0-1) and outscoring their opponents by a margin of 125 to 19, the Monroe County Eagles Mite Minor AAA hockey team earned themselves the #1 seed going into the Western New York Amateur Hockey League (WNYAHL) playoffs. more
