Memorial erected at accident site

Hamlin resident Ken Klopp stands next to a memorial he erected on his property, along Roosevelt Highway, to Jim Grashof and his dog, who recently died at this spot in a fatal motor vehicle accident. Ken and his wife, Jeanine, live on the Roosevelt Highway curved section just west of Redman Road. Ken said he has lost count of how many accidents have occurred in this area. Most of the problems occur for motorists traveling in an eastern direction, Ken Klopp said. The road has very little tilt on the east-bound lane and there is quite a drop-off on the shoulder for motorists who are driving near the 55 mph speed limit. "The majority of the accidents are in the winter," Klopp said. He believes a contributing cause may be the trees that border the southside of the road, shielding the road from the sun and preventing icy coatings and/or snow from melting. In the recent fatality, sun glare was thought to be a major factor. Photograph by Walter Horylev.
