The computer screen at the Monroe County-Rochester 9-1-1 Center looks like any other computer screen, but the screen images list possible serious consequences as they identify time, location and indication of a fire or fire potential. The messages trip a system of responses, some automatic, others requiring a review of the protocol system, which provides a to-do list of actions. more

Canal corporation's notification system
The New York State Thruway Authority/Canal Corporation will offer a new e-mail service called Canal TRANSalert to boaters and other customers, including residents of communities along the Canal, to inform them of major incidents and emergencies that may affect navigation on the New York State Canal System. more

Clean up continues at Diaz site in Holley
So far, close to $9 million has been spent in the clean-up efforts at the site of the former Diaz plant in the Village of Holley. The clean-up started with daily inspections of drums, tanks, piping and maintenance of the facility. more

Earth Day lessons take a crafty turn
Broken hair ties with butterflies, egg cartons, computer boxes and more went into a project two local home-schooled girls worked on for Earth Day. For Cassidy and Harley Felerski, the lesson they learn in their home schooling classes on Earth Day took a crafty turn when they started looking around their home for recycled items and turned it into a project that was on display at Seymour Library. more

Orleans County Youth Court seeks members
Membership applications are being accepted for Orleans County Youth Court. Applicants must be 14-18 years of age, residents of Orleans County and be enrolled in high school. more

Post office dedicated to Spencerport native
On April 14, the Averill Park Post Office was dedicated in honor of Major George Quamo who lost his life in 1968 during the Vietnam Conflict. Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Two Silver Stars, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit award, Presidential Unit Citation and countless other awards for leading the rescue of 14 men during the battle of Lang Vei, his plane disappeared April 14, 1968 in the jungles of Vietnam. more

Walkers gearing up for 25th CROP 10K
When the group of walkers steps off on May 6 for the 25th annual CROP Walk in Brockport, this year's organizer, Donna Carter, will participate in her 25th as well. "I haven't missed a walk since it started," she said. Carter's mother, Miriam McCauley, who is 83 this year, has walked for the past four years but decided to sit this one out, Carter said. more

Superman expert coming to library
The Parma Public Library will host Russ Dimino at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 5. Dimino, a regular columnist on the website for www.Kryptonsite.com and an expert on the history of Superman, will be at the library to share his expertise with Superman fans. more

Seventy BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education students attended the state wide Skills USA competition held in Syracuse April 18-20. Bringing home honors were: Midge McCloskey, NYS Advisor of the Year; Tianna Bethune, NYS President. more

Students hop for hearts
Students at St. Paul Lutheran School in Hilton raised more than $1,000 for the American Heart Association when 43 students in grades K through 8 participated in the Hop-A-Thon on March 8. more

A Meet the Candidates for the Hilton Board of Education election will be Thursday, May 3, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Board Meeting Room of the Quest/West Avenue School, 225 West Avenue, Hilton. There are four candidates for three positions on the ballot at the upcoming election. more

Hilton students explore history
Ninety students of teacher Debbie Montrallo's class at Hilton High School visited five different museums in the Seneca Falls area as part of the Teaching American History Grant Program Crossroads of Change program. "The rich history of Seneca Falls serves as a lens to understanding the larger themes of American history," Montrallo said. "Hilton students were examining the path of women's rights movement, suffrage issues, and the impact of central New York reformers." more

SUNY Brockport Theater students performing in Hungary
The Department of Theatre at SUNY College at Brockport has been invited to participate in the 2007 Debrecen Drama Festival in Debrecen, Hungary. On Saturday, May 5, six students from the department will perform three of the 10-minute plays from SUNY Brockport's production of "Festival of Ten." The participating students are senior Clayton Cole, freshman Matthew Robinson, senior Kyle Leonard, freshman Lauren Miller, senior Coletta Fry and freshman Eric Yengel. more
