Post office dedicated to Spencerport native

On April 14, the Averill Park Post Office was dedicated in honor of Major George Quamo who lost his life in 1968 during the Vietnam Conflict. Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Two Silver Stars, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit award, Presidential Unit Citation and countless other awards for leading the rescue of 14 men during the battle of Lang Vei, his plane disappeared April 14, 1968 in the jungles of Vietnam. Quamo's remains were not discovered until six years later when they were returned to the states and buried in Arlington National Cemetery in 1974. Quamo was a member of the Special Forces unit MacV Sog. (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, Studies and Observation Group).

He is the brother of James Quamo who lives with his wife Pamela and their family in the Spencerport area, brother to Murietta Quamo Bauer of Spencerport and Niki Quamo Steitz of Florida, the late Tefta Quamo Moses of Chappaqua, New York and the late Ylllika Quamo Runkle of La'Canada, California.
