MCWA continues cleaning, lining program in Spencerport

Three phases of work under construction in the Village of Spencerport by a contractor hired by the Monroe County Water Authority are part of a project that involves cleaning and lining the unlined distribution water mains in the village systems, according to a press release from the MCWA.

Phase 1 is in progress and should be completed by July. The streets affected by Phase 1 are: Amity, Martha and Clark, Ballard, West, Lyell and Maplewood Avenues and Canalside Drive. A short section of Brockport Road near the water tank is also affected.

Phase 2 begins after Phase 1 is complete and will affect South Union Street from Brockport Road to Slayton Avenue, Brockport Road from Village Walk to South Union Street, Parkhurst, Hillside and Hillcrest Drives. It is anticipated that phase will be complete by September.

Phase 3 comes on the heels of the completion of Phase 2 and involves Canal Road, Upton Avenue, Mill, Bower, Cottage and South Union Streets from Slayton Avenue to just south of the canal bridge. The project should be done by November.

The work involves removing built up material from within the water main and placing a cement mortar lining on the inside of the pipe to prevent further corrosion. Along with improved water quality, the ability to maintain pressure and flow for fire fighting purposes are enhanced.

Mayor Ted Walker said one of the main reasons for the project is to increase the water flow. "It could really make a difference in flow as it relates to fire fighting when we really need to increase volumes," he said.

Once the cement is set, the lining is inspected with a video camera, the water mains are flushed, pressure tested, disinfected and approved by the health department before homes are reattached to the main. Contractors lay temporary bypass pipes for homes while the main lines are being refurbished.

"We're happy that the MCWA is continuing to make improvements to our lines," Walker said. "They took over about four years ago and have replaced mains and continue to upgrade our system. It might be a little inconvenient while the project is going on as are all infrastructure projects but it seems to be progressing smoothly."
