Sadie Wilson and Kevin Nacy

Volunteer logs 18,500 hours at Lakeside Hospital

Sadie Wilson, after the death of her daughter in 1966, needed to find a way to go on. "I had to do something and I thought helping others might do me some good. Lakeside is a place of solace and healing; as I helped others, I got back more than I ever gave."

"Volunteers help patients in so many ways, once a patient needed a button sewed on so I drove home and got my sewing kit and sewed her button. It's the little things that make all the difference," Sadie said.

Sadie is 86 years young and served as the Lakeside Director of Volunteers for 25 years. She remembered a time during the big ice storm when she dodged trees and powerlines as she walked to the hospital to meet the needs of patients. I didn't think about myself, I thought about the patients and how difficult it was for them," she said. "Comforting patients and families who are upset, in pain and stressed is our specialty. We work to help share the load with the medical staff to assist in any way that we can."

"Her energy and dedication are an inspiration to all of us," said Kevin Nacy, CEO Lakeside Health System. Lakeside has a volunteer recognition dinner every year. This year's event will be held on May 8, where 170 volunteers will be honored.
