Local gymnast takes silver at championships

Eighteen year-old Bright Raven gymnast Kerry Apeland of Chili took second place on balance beam (9.40) at the USAG Level 9 Eastern Championships held in Florida, May 13. Apeland also played a valuable role as a member of the Region 6 winning team. Apeland was one of six gymnasts in her division to represent Region 6 which includes all of the New England states in addition to New York. The Region 6 Senior D Team took first place as a team at the Championships. Apeland is a senior at Churchville-Chili High School and is planning to attend Rochester Institute of Technology next fall.

Bright Raven Gymnastics' Level 6 Team traveled to Orchard Park the same weekend to compete in the Level 6 State Championships and emerged with two State Champions. Megan Stevens of Brockport captured first place in floor exercise competition with a score of 9.55. Her all around score of 36.875 was also good for the sixth place medal in the 10-year-old division. Stevens is in fourth grade at the Brockport Hill School.

In the 12-year-old division, Danielle Adam of Greece finished in first place on balance beam with a score of 9.40. Adam is in sixth grade at the Arcadia Middle School. Teammate Carly King, of Churchville, earned ninth place on vault (9.425) in the same division.

In the 13 and over division, Hannah Fouts of Brighton earned second place on balance beam (9.40). Kristina Schiffhauer of Greece earned three medals: fifth place on floor (9.00), sixth place on bars (9.15) and seventh all around (36.15). Amber Rice of Brockport placed ninth on bars (9.10) and Haley Cunningham of LeRoy took 10th place on balance beam (9.05).
