Appointment of new Riga deputy supervisor raises some questions
A recent decision by Riga Town Supervisor Pamela Moore has been met with concern by some residents. During a special meeting of the Riga Town Board on May 9, Moore announced that effective immediately, Council Member Kenneth Kuter was no longer deputy supervisor and that she had appointed Gilbert Budd as the new deputy supervisor. Budd is Moore's husband. more

Area fire departments complete FAST training
About a dozen volunteer firefighters completed the rigorous Firefighter Assist Search Team (FAST) course and a firefighter survival course in recent weeks. more

Fundraising event features talk on sunken schooner
The Oak Orchard Lighthouse Museum will host an historic maritime dinner presentation, "Discovery of an Early 19th Century Lake Ontario Schooner off Oak Orchard Harbor" on Friday, August 10. more

Hilton pastor receives doctorate
The Rev. Michael B. Merrill, pastor of Parma Christian Fellowship in Hilton, received the Doctor of Ministry degree at Northeastern Seminary on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday, May 19. Merrill was part of the first cohort of doctoral students at the seminary. more

Lift Bridge hosts event in Rochester
"Out of the Book," a new series of short films about notable authors, will be presented by Lift Bridge Book Shop (of Brockport) at Writers and Books, in Rochester. more

Nutrition Education Team at Genesee County Farmers' Market
The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County nutrition educators and the SMART Center Mobile Unit will be at the Genesee County Farmers' Market from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday, June 15 through October 26. The nutrition educators will prepare different recipes made from locally-grown fresh produce donated by farmers' market vendors. The public will be able to sample recipes and get answers to nutrition questions. more

Seymour Library hires new director
The Seymour Library Board has hired a new director. Cassandra Guthrie began her appointment as library director on Wednesday, May 16. "Brockport is very appealing to me," Guthrie said. "I think it is going to be a nice match for all of us." She succeeds Pat Trek who served as interim director since November 2005. more

BCSD receives universal Pre-Kindergarten grant
The Brockport Central School District will again offer a grant-funded Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) Program. Because of additional funding from the New York State Education Department, next year's program will be expanded from 33 slots to 105. more

C-C team gives back to community
Churchville-Chili High School FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Teams 340 and 424 thanked the community for donations to the team bottle and can drive. more

Holley High School holds job interview day
Holley seniors will be entering the job market and facing college more prepared because of a new career preparation activities that took place this spring. The series began with a visit from Bryant and Stratton representatives who talked with students in their English classes about how to create a resume. School Counselors Alison Albright and Andy Ruff, along with School Social Worker Samantha Zelent, worked with seniors on writing their resumes in the computer labs. more

Holley teacher receives SUNY Brockport teaching award
Christine Langelotti, a Holley kindergarten teacher, was presented with the SUNY Brockport Roy L. Bubb Award for being an outstanding supervising teacher of student teachers from the university's elementary student teaching centers. more

Kendall students send their thanks
During National Military Appreciation Month in May, Buick, Pontiac and GMC dealers across the country are partnering with A Million Thanks to collect individual thank you notes to send directly to our men and women in uniform. more

Rachel's Challenge touches Holley students, inspires kindness
Rachel Scott was the first person killed in Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her brother, Craig, was in the library that day and lost two close friends and narrowly escaped death himself. more

Spencerport educator to retire
Assistant Superintendent for Instruction at the Spencerport School District, Dr. Bernadette Skobjak's resignation was accepted by the board of education on May 22. She plans to retire in September and has been with the district since 1999. more

Spencerport Math MVPs
Spencerport High School students Tom Sochia, Margaret Meyerhofer and Steve Burek led the Monroe County teams in the New York Math League competition in New York City. more

Holley Elementary's Safe School Ambassadors sponsored Peace Week in May encouraging students to make a difference by bringing peace to their school community. more

Blue Devils move on to semi's
Brockport overcame a 4-3 deficit with a run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to defeat Webster Thomas 6-3 and advance to the Class AA baseball semi-finals. more

Giruzzi in as Hilton A.D.
Michael Giruzzi will begin his term as the new Director of Athletics at Hilton High School on June 4 replacing Denney Wilcox, who held the position since 2000 and retired this past winter, along with interim Director Dennis Fries. more

Gymnasts medal at state meet
Bright Raven gymnasts traveled to Long Island to compete in the Level 5 State Championships May 18-20 bringing home many awards for their performance in individual and all around competition. more

Hardie whiffs 17 in no-hitter
Pitcher Lisa Hardie registered 17 of 21 outs via strikeout as she and her Hilton teammates dominated Charlotte/Marshall 11-0 in Section V softball quarterfinal playoff action. more

Jim Ferris Memorial 5K race steps off June 23
Runners are invited to participate in the Jim Ferris Memorial 5K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, June 23. The race starts at 9 a.m., walk at 10 a.m. at the Holley Elementary School. more

Kendall falls to Pavilion in semi's
Pavilion strung together three walks, a hit batsman and four hits to score six runs in the third in a 10-2 victory over Kendall in the Class C baseball semi-finals. The Eagles were in the semi's for the first time since advancing to the state tournament in 1999. more

Tee time for Friends of Wrestling
The 15th annual Section Five "Friends of Wrestling" Golf Tournament will take place on Monday, June 25 at Victor Hills Golf Club. The tournament will be a four-man scramble, with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. more
