The Brockport Breast Cancer Support Group (BBCSG) honored founding member Irma Pylyshenko at the group's May meeting, which took place in Lakeside Memorial Hospital's Board Conference Room, Brockport. more

Brockport plays host to Bienvenida
On June 24, a tradition of more than 20 years will be continued. The annual welcome of the migrant farmworkers, or Bienvenida, will take place in Brockport. more

Clarkson Rodeo gallops into town for third year
In its third year, Clarkson Rodeo Days brings a full show of equestrian events and will likely draw close to 8,000 spectators and participants. In its first year it was voted the "Best New Rodeo" by the National Rodeo Association. "This rodeo is the 'real deal,' " Pat Tooley, president of Rodeo Days said. "We draw about 300 cowboys and the weekend offers a truly family atmosphere." more

Hilton-Parma Recreation closer to accreditation
Officials at Hilton-Parma Recreation are hoping to become one of only three recreation departments in New York state to attain national accreditation through the Commission of Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies. A two-person team from the Agency spent time at the Rec Center reviewing the 156 minimum standards that must be met to achieve accreditation. "Before the team left they gave us a preliminary report that was very favorable for our receiving the accreditation," Recreation Director Steve Fowler said. "The final report will be given to us within 30 days." more

Hamlin Public Library awarded book grant
The Hamlin Public Library was one of 2,000 libraries awarded a We the People Bookshelf Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. more

Nominees sought for volunteer recognition
Many people volunteer time and effort to improve the quality of life in Greece - and yet go unrecognzied, but in the last four years, 103 volunteers have been recognized. more

Orleans County churches look at opportunities for collaboration
Parishes throughout Orleans County are on an important passage of reflection, contemplation, and prayer. Each parish has examined its strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for collaboration with the other parishes in their cluster and throughout the county. The goal of this self-evaluation was to develop proposals to increase efficiencies and enhance the vibrancy of the parish communities in the Buffalo Diocese. more

Red Cross plans auction
The American Red Cross in Orleans County is planning a Disaster Relief Auction for September 8 in the Medina Canal Basin. more

Register for Environmental Careers Outdoors (ECO) Camp
Environmental Careers Outdoors (ECO) Camp is a day camp for middle school youth interested in the environment. ECO Camp offers opportunities for children to learn about the many careers available in the "green industry." Youth work with landscapers, urban foresters, wildlife specialists d, horticulture experts, golf course owners, and environmental scientists. The week is full of "hands-on" activities that include being a guide for a Nature Center, taking a trip to a Conservation Field Station, and having a "shot" at sustainable golf course management. more

Scholarships granted to local students
The Margaret A. McGrath Charitable Foundation awarded 17 scholarships totaling $50,000 to local students for the 2007-2008 academic school year. The foundation offers two types of scholarships to residents of the Towns of Sweden and Hamlin. The Philip and Margaret Dollard Business Scholarship is for those majoring in business and the Marie Dollard McGrath Elementary Education Scholarship is awarded to those majoring in elementary education. more

The Great Lakeside Bed Race ready to roll
The Great Lakeside Bed Race is back for a second year. Organizers are seeking residents to form teams of five co-workers, neighbors, family or friends, decorate a bed and be a part of the fundraiser to benefit Lakeside Health System. more

Remembering veterans
Memorial Day is the time we remember the nation's fallen heroes and give thanks to those that served and are serving in the armed forces. The Sackett-Merrill-White American Legion and Auxiliary - Post and Unit 575 in Bergen, visited area cemeteries to place flags at the graves of Legionnaires and to place flags and plant geraniums at the graves of Auxiliary members. more

Carrying a tune
Members of the Sweden Singers, directed by Maryellen Giese, performed Wednesday, June 6 at the Sweden Senior Center. They have performed at various locations in Brockport and the surrounding communities.

Hilton-Parma's Senior Center receives oven
On May 29, the Hilton-Parma Senior Center received a new built-in wall oven unit for its Nutrition Program. The center received financial support and commitment by Monroe County's Office for the Aging, the Town of Parma and the Village of Hilton for the purchase and installation of this oven. more

Black and Kyu Belt tests held at Gillam Grant
On June 2, Karate black belt promotion tests were held at the Gillam Grant Center in Byron-Bergen. more

Hilton-Athena in Class AA final
It came down to a battle between second seed Hilton and first seed Greece Athena for the Class AA baseball title. Looking for their first championship since 1997, the Cadets held favored Athena scoreless through four innings before the Trojans broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning for a 4-0 victory. more

Rangers induct two into hall
The Spencerport Rangers Athletic Hall of Fame grew by two at ceremonies held June 6 at the annual Athletic Banquet as Tom Billone and Steve Dzina were inducted. more
