Widener, a Churchville resident, who upon graduation from high school, joined the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. more

Master Forest Owner regional coordinators appointed
A corps of 12 volunteers are now regional coordinators for the New York Master Forest Owner Volunteer Program. The newly established Master Forest Owner (MFO) Advisory Committee (comprised of NY Forest Owner Association members, Cornell Cooperative Extension Educators and MFO volunteers) has recruited 12 of the 13 volunteers needed to fill "MFO Regional Coordinators" across the state. more

Ogden Farmers' Library welcomes new director
"Ogden is a nice community," said Katherine (Kay) Hughes-Dennett. "It has a lot of similarities to where I grew up and I love that atmosphere." Hughes-Dennett is the new director of the Ogden Farmers' Library. She began May 21, succeeding Patti Uttaro who accepted a position at the Central Library. more

Riga Town Board delays attempts to seek Home Rule Message
During a special meeting Monday, June 18, Riga Town Board members asked special counsel Marcia Havens to notify Assemblywoman Susan John and State Senator James Alesi that the town would like to withdraw its request for the Home Rule Message for the legislative session that was to end by June 22. more

Spencerport woman, at 97, living life to the fullest
Truey Cooper turned 97 on May 6 and celebrated her birthday with a ride on an all terrain vehicle in Washington state while visiting her children and grandchildren. "There was a view my kids wanted me to see and the only way to get there was on the 'motorcycle,' " she said. "I held on tight and asked if this thing could go any faster." more

Timetable set for decision on Lake Ontario
and St. Lawrence River water levels

The International Joint Commission (Commission) will release its proposed decision on Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River water level and flow regulation on September 17. The decision package will include a new draft Order of Approval, a new plan for regulating Lake Ontario outflows and informational papers on the proposed decision. more

CCE offers dial gauge testing
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County's Nutrition Department offers dial gauge testing for pressure canners. For a $5 fee, gauges will be tested for accuracy and certified for use up to one year from the certification date. more

Newly installed officer
Lion Joe Lee of the Hilton Lions Club was installed as the 2007-2008 club president by Past Council. Chairman Irv Confino from the Irondequoit Lions Club. Lee hopes to raise the level of community service and increase the club's membership. more

Sweden seeks fishery advisory representative
Sweden Supervisor Nat O. Lester, III is seeking a resident of the town of Sweden to attend Monroe County Fishery Advisory Board meetings as his representative. The fishery board meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of the month at the Irondequoit Town Hall, 1280 Titus Avenue. more

Three area juniors attending Churchville-Chili and Spencerport high schools have been chosen by Harvey C. Noone and Ferris Goodridge to attend the American Legion Auxiliary's Department of New York Empire Girls State sessions at SUNY Brockport June 24-29. more

50th Annual Flag Day Parade

For the past 49 years, Holley Elementary School has celebrated Flag Day in a big way. This year, for the 50th anniversary celebration, the entire student population, pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade, led by the Student Council, paraded from the school to the Murray-Holley Historical Museum. more

Kendall schools ranked high in western New York
For the seventh consecutive year, Kendall Central School District ranked high on the list of public school districts in western New York by Buffalo's Business First newspaper. The district ranked 39 out of 97 school systems in the eight-county region, which is up four places from last year. Kendall also ranked first among the five districts in Orleans County. more

Limited pre-kindergarten program to begin in Hilton
A pre-kindergarten program for four-year-olds residing in the Hilton Central School District was approved by the Board of Education at its regular meeting June 11. Set to begin in September 2007, the "Universal Pre-Kindergarten" (UPK) program is based on the state's allocation of limited funding this year, according to Director of Elementary Education and Staff Development Mark Bower. more

New principal takes the helm at Fairbanks Road Elementary
The Churchville-Chili Board of Education approved the appointment of Todd S. Yunker to the position of principal for Fairbanks Road Elementary School, effective July 23. The appointment was made at the board's meeting on June 20. more

Students teach staff the finer points of chess
At Holley Elementary School, students in Denise Johnstone's class are learning the finer points of the game of chess. "By learning games of strategy, like chess, students strengthen their ability to use both sides of their brain as well as memory skills, social skills, expressive language and good sportsmanship," said Johnstone. more

Local gymnasts place at States
Bright Raven Gymnastics Boys Teams traveled to Binghamton May 20 to compete in the USA Gymnastics Level 4 State Championships. more

Trapper Training courses offered in July
A trapper training course is required for all persons seeking a first trapping license. There is no minimum age for participants, but adults must attend with younger children. Courses are not as numerous as other sportsmen training courses and therefore are harder to find. The following are two courses scheduled at this time in Region 8 - the Western Finger Lakes Region. more
