GBDC celebrates five years, elects officers

The Board of Directors of the Greater Brockport Development Corporation (GBDC) held its election of officers at its fifth annual meeting in May. Elected were: Kathy Halstead, president; Bill Andrews, vice president; Ian Coyle, treasurer; and Josephine Matela, secretary. Hal Legg was appointed to the board, joining Duane Beckett, Chris Cook Florence, Paul Drake and founding members Scott Winner and Jim Whipple.

"I am honored to have been chosen for this position, especially as a relative newcomer to Brockport. I look forward to working with the entire board of directors and our community leaders to continue to advance the economic vitality of Brockport," Halstead said.

The Greater Brockport Development Corporation was formed in 2002 with the goals of combating community deterioration; advancement of education; erection and maintenance of public buildings, monuments and works.

Since its inception the GBDC has been instrumental in several efforts including: securing and disbursing funds utilized in the construction of the award-winning canal-front Welcome Center; the formation and administration of the Brockport Museum Committee; support of the Walk/Bike Brockport Action Group; and securing nearly $350,000 in state and federal funds to be used in the restoration of historic buildings in the village, according to a press release.

On August 4, from 4 to 6 p.m., the GBDC will hold a wine and cheese fundraiser in conjunction with the visit of the Lois McClure, a canal schooner replica that will be visiting Brockport.

The GBDC is also developing plans for participation in the redevelopment of abandoned industrial sites within the Village of Brockport, the pursuit of private and public sector grants for the rehabilitation of residential housing; and commercial and industrial recruitment, retention and redevelopment efforts.
