Holley Elementary celebrates 50th Annual Flag Day Parade

For the past 49 years, Holley Elementary School has celebrated Flag Day in a big way. This year, for the 50th anniversary celebration, the entire student population, pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade, led by the Student Council, paraded from the school to the Murray-Holley Historical Museum. Everyone wore red, white and blue clothing, including 50th Flag Day Celebration t-shirts designed by sixth grader Kristina Kuellertz, and carried handmade banners and flags.

Once students and staff arrived at the Museum, a moving history of Holley's Flag Days was read by Virginia Robb, a retired Holley teacher, then sixth grader Randy Andrews read his winning Flag Day essay. Superintendent Robert D'Angelo and Holley Mayor John Kenney presented the Catherine B. Press Citizenship Award to two fifth graders, Lexi Reyngoudt and Jesus Mendoza, as well as good citizenship awards to one student from each classroom in grades K-6. The Press Award winners each received a $50 savings bond and will have their names engraved on the plaque in the Elementary School foyer. Each Citizenship Award winner received a T-shirt and certificate.

This longtime celebration is an opportunity for students and staff to show pride in the American flag and for school district retirees to visit, according to district officials. So the school always has a reminder of this special day, a flag that was flown over the state capital has been ordered for Holley Elementary School.
