Brockport implements quality service initiative
Brockport Benchmarks was introduced as a new quality service initiative being undertaken in the village. "This will be a way for residents to log problems and complaints and for the village to respond and work toward resolution of these problems," Trustee David Wagenhauser said at the July 16 board meeting. "This new administrative tool will track resident concerns and requests for service. An accountability and performance management system will then measure the village staff's timeliness in resolving the problem, concern or service request." more

Car lands in Erie Canal in Spencerport
Investigators believe a car traveling south on Route 259 was intentionally driven over the curb between the utility pole on the right and the stairs on the left (top right photo) and landed in the canal. A large crowd of people watched the effort to locate and remove the car Wednesday, morning, July 17. more

Civil War encampment planned at Hamlin Beach
The quiet and serene park of Hamlin Beach State Park will be disrupted with cannons, musket fire and the sounds of the Civil War for the weekend of August 18 and 19 as the War Between the States is re-enacted. more

Cookie contest prize awarded
"I love to bake. It's my passion!" said Kathy Hundley of Hamlin when she learned she had won the Brockport Sidewalk Fair's Chocolate Chip Cookie Contest. Of the two plates of cookies she entered, the winner was "Everybody's Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies." more

Firefighter convention comes to Churchville
Hundreds of volunteer firefighters will gather in Churchville from July 25 through 28 for the Western New York Volunteer Fireman's Association's 108th State Convention. The Association's president, Forrest Skelton, is a member of the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department. He said this is the first time the convention has been held in Churchville. "It is common for the convention to be hosted by the department to which the WNYVFA president belongs," he said. "The convention was last held in Monroe County in 1990." more

Lawmakers pass Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River Basin Compact
The New York State Senate moved to protect the integrity of the Great Lakes for present and future generations by passing the Great Lakes Compact on July 16. With growing threats to export Great Lakes water out of the Basin, New York senators unanimously passed the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact. more

Monroe County to utilize underage drinking tipline
Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn, along with local law enforcement personnel, including Brockport Police Chief Daniel Varrenti, approved Monroe County to utilize the Underage Drinking Tipline established by Regional Action Phone, Inc. and Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. more

Used soccer equipment collection underway
A used soccer equipment drive that began Friday, July 20, at the 2007 Brockport International Soccer Tournament in Brockport, continues through 3 p.m. Sunday, July 22. Following that the Sweden/Clarkson Rec Center, 4927 Lake Road, Brockport, will accept donations through September 2007, on behalf of the Brockport Soccer Club. Drop off is any time it is open. Look for the donation bin in the main hallway of the Center. more

B-B student attends Girls State
Girls State, a citizenship training program for high school juniors, was founded in 1947 by the American Legion Auxiliary. It uses practical experience to teach about government processes from the local to the state level, emphasizing the responsibilities of each individual as a citizen in a democracy. It is held each summer in 49 states. Empire Girls State was held on the SUNY Brockport Campus. more

Class of 1957 celebrates 50th reunion
The Holley High School Class of 1957 had a 50th reunion dinner at Hickory Ridge on July 13 followed by a picnic in Brockport on the 14th. more

Hilton Board of Education elects officers
At its annual reorganizational meeting July 10, the seven-member Hilton Board of Education voted to re-elect Daniel Wellington of Greece as president and elected Aggie Seneway of Parma, vice president. Among the business transacted were these reappointments: Patricia Unterborn, district clerk; Sandra Ricciuto, district treasurer; and internal auditor the Francis Marchese & Co. more

Kendall appoints new school leader
Julie E. Christensen has been appointed as the superintendent of the Kendall Central School District. Christensen most recently served as assistant superintendent for administration and personnel for the Gates Chili Central School District, a position she held since 2002. more

Students received scholarships from the Grand Lodge and Trustees of the Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York. more

Participating in government
Patrick Spring, of Hilton High School, attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., based on the nomination by one of his teachers, Amy Ward. He spent ten days in Washington with other scholars from across the United States. more

Local boy qualifies for national drive,
chip and putt championships

Nathan Judd, of Sweden, qualified for the Mutual of Omaha National Drive, Chip & Putt National Championships presented by The Golf Channel. Judd qualified by winning the 13-14 year old division in the Lake Erie Regional Championship on Sunday, June 23 in Waterford, Pennsylvania. more

Spencerport Coach honored
Spencerport Varsity Wrestling Coach William Jacotout was selected as the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Region I "Coach of the Year" for the 2006-07 school year. The national board of directors of the NWCA recognized the efforts of Jacotout, who led the Rangers to an undefeated season, the Monroe County and Section V titles and the New York State Championship. more

Spencerport names varsity volleyball coach
Aaron Austin has been named the new Spencerport Rangers Varsity Boys Volleyball Coach. Austin is a 1999 graduate of Spencerport High School and was a member of the boy's varsity volleyball team. more
