Churchville-Chili grad James E. Widener, USMC
In a fitting tribute to the memory of James E. Widener, U.S. Marines, who fought in Vietnam and died in a helicopter crash in 1967 and whose remains were discovered and identified 39 years later, hundreds of people attended a ceremony held at the Churchville-Chili Central School Campus on Saturday, July 21 where James was a three-letter sports figure. more

Hamlin schedules two-part meeting
The Town of Hamlin will conduct a two-part special board meeting, Monday, July 30, that will encompass plans for a community center and following that, presentations and findings from the Wind Tower Committee. more

Nominations sought for Greenway and Community Trail awards
Parks & Trails New York, a statewide parks and trails advocacy organization, is seeking nominations for its 2007 Greenway and Community Trail Awards. The awards, which will be presented September 28 at Parks & Trails New York's statewide trails and greenways conference, recognize the leadership, creativity and donation of time, talent and materials behind many of New York's trails. The deadline for submission is August 31. more

On a tour of Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge

It’s the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, a gem of a collection of freshwater marshes and hardwood swamps bounded by wet meadows, forests, pastures and woods on almost 11,000 acres off Route 63, south of Medina and Route 31. more

Spencerport firehouse bids bring sticker shock
Devastated - that was the feeling Tom Friedo, chairman of the Spencerport Fire District Board of Commissioners, said he felt when the board started opening bids for the reconstruction of Spencerport Fire District's Station 1 on July 19. "I opened the bids and could tell almost at a glance that they were higher than we anticipated," he said. more

Flying to Hilton for breakfast
The $5 breakfast feast featured scrambled eggs, bacon, French toast, sausage, potatoes and a drink. The line grew to about 275 around 9:30 a.m., in what was surely a record attendance, helped by a gorgeous summer weather morning and a great day for flying. more

Holley residents react to change in athletic director
Close to 70 people packed the meeting room on July 23 waiting to voice their support for John Grillo, the man who held the athletic director position in the school for the past seven years. Grillo, whose contract was unanimously approved at the June 18 Holley School Board of Education meeting, saw it revoked at a later meeting, following an executive session, by a vote of six to three. more


In Seniors:

Greece Senior Center receives new bus
A new 20 passenger mini bus, to be used for the Greece Senior Center, was purchased with grant funds. "Given the fact that transportation consistently ranks in the top three concerns of seniors, we are excited to provide this important resource," said County Executive Maggie Brooks. "By accessing this state funding without impacting the county budget, we are increasing the availability of senior transportation that will improve the quality of life for our seniors in Greece, especially those who are no longer able to drive." more

Local women bring home the silver
Millie Gianfagna, of Clarkson, and Gloria Miller, of Greece, won silver medals in the 75-79 women's tennis doubles bracket at the 2007 Empire State Senior Games at SUNY Cortland the week of June 5-10. more

Ranger fall sport preseason meeting set for August 27
Hosted by the Spencerport Sports Booster Club and the Spencerport Rangers Athletic Department, the fall 2007 season V/JV parent and student-athlete preseason meeting will be held on Monday, August 27. Dinner options will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the High School Football Stadium concession stand. The meeting will begin at 6:45 p.m. in the High School Performing Arts Center and will include a presentation by John Pelin, director of athletics, followed by individual team sport meetings. more
