Greece Senior Center receives new bus

A new 20 passenger mini bus, to be used for the Greece Senior Center, was purchased with grant funds. "Given the fact that transportation consistently ranks in the top three concerns of seniors, we are excited to provide this important resource," said County Executive Maggie Brooks. "By accessing this state funding without impacting the county budget, we are increasing the availability of senior transportation that will improve the quality of life for our seniors in Greece, especially those who are no longer able to drive."

The mini-bus, which was purchased with $39,714 in funding from New York State Office for the Aging, was secured to accommodate the increase in seniors attending the new Greece Community and Senior Center. The new 20 passenger mini-bus replaced smaller, less accessible 12 passenger mini-bus.

The country contracts with Medical Motor Service to provide the Senior Transportation Program for many of the senior centers in the county. The County Office for the Aging allots a certain number of transportation hours per week to most senior centers in the county, however the Greece Senior Center has continually "maxed out" the number of hours allocated to their center.

Last year, Medical Motor Service provided over 6,600 one way trips to the Greece Senior Center.

With the purchase of the mini-bus, more seniors will be able to attend the Senior Nutrition Program at the Greece Center, providing them the opportunity to receive a healthy meal, socialize with others and remain living independently. The mini-bus may also be used for shopping and banking and recreational outings.
