Outdoor recreation and tourism
in Orleans County get boost

The Assembly Republican Agriculture, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation Task Force heard from business owners and recreational organizations during a forum in Waterport aimed at protecting and promoting the outdoor sporting industry in Orleans County and around the state. "Fishing is one of the most popular activities in both Orleans and Genesee counties," said Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,I,C-Batavia). "Outdoor sports are a major factor in bringing new tourism to our area and helping with our local economy. I appreciate the opportunity to host today's forum and I am fully committed to addressing the concerns and ideas of our local sports enthusiasts when we return to Albany."

Attendees included representatives from the Orleans County Economic Development Center, Greater Niagara County Byways and Orleans Outdoors, as well as other local businesses.

Prior to the public forum, task force members toured the Trout & Salmon Net Pen Rearing Project in Kent, and were given a presentation by local pen rearing expert Mike Ayott.

"I am pleased to join the task force in Orleans County," said Assemblyman Jim Bacalles (R,C-Corning). "Our state benefits from the tourism brought in through outdoor activities and it is an honor to be here in support of our sportsmen who do an exemplary job encouraging New York's largest natural industry."

The 16-member task force is charged with gathering information from local farmers, hunting and fishing organizations, business owners and tourism officials on ways to improve New York's outdoor recreation industry. It travels throughout the state, developing strategies to promote outdoor recreation and raise awareness of the impact tourism has on the state's economy.
