Iroquois Observations, free nature programs in October

The Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and the Buffalo Audubon Society present the fall program of "Iroquois Observations" (IO), a series of free nature programs.

On Sunday, October 7, there will be a canoe trip on Oak Orchard Creek from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at the bridge on Knowlesville Road. Bring a canoe and life jacket.

On Saturday, October 13, the Buffalo Audubon Society will dedicate the Cayuga Overlook observation platform at 9 a.m. The platform was refurbished in memory of Timothy D. Horst, longtime member of the Buffalo Audubon Society and IO volunteer. The ceremony will be followed by a Scope Watch.

On Saturday, October 20, activities include: 9 a.m.-noon: a Birding Field Trip. Meet at Cayuga Overlook on Route 77 to explore the Refuge and surrounding birding hot spots by car; 1-5 p.m. Scope Watch - Come to Cayuga Overlook and join experienced birders as we "scope out' migrating ducks, swans, geese and other birds and from 7-9 p.m.: Owl Prowl - An after dark exploration for owls on the prowl. Be prepared for a short off-road walk. Meet at Kanyoo Nature Trail off Route 77.

The refuge Headquarters/Visitor Contact Station will be open both Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. from October 13-21 in addition to regular office hours of Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. For information contact 585-948-5445.
