Village of Spencerport introducing garbage toter program

Responding to requests from residents to purchase large garbage toters from local home improvement stores, the Village of Spencerport is initiating a new, voluntary Garbage Toter program. The village is purchasing a new refuse truck equipped to lift and dump toters and will be retrofitting the existing refuse truck to lift and dump the toters as well.

Currently the village does not allow the garbage toters because the refuse trucks aren't equipped to dump the toters and the weight of the toter is too excessive to be dumped manually.
Toters will be offered to residents at a cost of about $60. They will be heavy-duty 95 gallon roll out carts with a lid and have a 10-year manufacturers' warranty. All toters will be numbered with Spencerport logo and recorded at the DPW garage

"This is a win-win situation for everyone; the capacity of 95 gallon cart is equal to or more than the 3 cans allowed now, residents will be able to eliminate their three garbage cans and the refuse collectors will reduce the likelihood of injury and increase their efficiency," Spencerport Department of Public Works Superintendent Tom West said. The purchase of a toter is not required, standard cans are still acceptable, but only village-issued toters can be lifted with the new equipment.

The village expects to have the program in place by January of 2008. For information or to order a toter for delivery, contact Liz Venezky at 352-6851, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
