Brockport wins homecoming tilt

Brockport scored 21 points in the second half enroute to a 28-14 win over rival Cortland during the college's Homecoming. The win marked the ninth for the Golden Eagles over the Red Dragons in the last 13 meetings.

Senior wide receiver Mike Maciejewski caught a 39 yard touchdown pass from Zack Luke following a Josh Day interception at the Red Dragon 41 yard line to give the Golden Eagles a 7-0 first half lead.

Midway through the third quarter, Garet Lynch scored on a 4-yard run, but the extra point failed as Brockport built a 13-0 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, Cortland scored on a 77-yard blocked field goal return, but the Golden Eagles came right back to again lead by a pair of touchdowns. Matt McCormick was on the receiving end of an 11 yard TD pass from Luke and Maciejewski caught the two-point conversion pass from McCormick for a 21-7 lead.

Brockport's Garrett Axtell forced a Cortland fumble and Dale Buck recovered at the Red Dragon 23 yard line to spark a second touchdown catch of nine yards by Maciejewski with 1:37 left.

Cortland put together a four play scoring drive over the final seconds with Shane Acre scoring the final points of the game.

"We went into the week emphasizing that we had only five days to prepare and to use every day to prepare properly," said head coach Rocco Salomone, whose team lost their home opener to Salisbury State. "We had good focus today and played all four quarters instead of just two. Our defense played very well limiting Cortland to just two first downs in the first half and creating turnovers.

"We helped ourselves and now believe we can do some things."

Lynch led all rushers with 132 yards on 27 carries with McCormick also gaining over 100 yards on the ground. Luke completed 12 passes for 147 yards while Maciejewski caught three passes for 73 yards. Senior linebacker Nick Duchscherer was tops on the defense with ten tackles, seven of them unassisted.
